The agreement between the IEHF and Taylor & Francis
The IEHF rules require all Registered Members and Fellows to take, at a reduced members' rate, one Taylor & Francis journal as part of their annual subscription. Members sometimes query this requirement but it is, in fact, beneficial to the Institute and to the discipline as a whole.
The 'journal element' of MIEHF & FIEHF subscriptions is paid to Taylor & Francis by the IEHF. However, under a long-standing contract, Taylor & Francis makes an annual payment to the Institute, based on overall journal sales. Over past years, this payment to the IEHF has been of the same order as the total 'journal element' of MIEHF & FIEHF subscriptions. Thus, we have a 'win-win' situation, in which the Institute receives roughly one third of its annual income from Taylor & Francis, while those members receive at least one journal at a large discount.
Moreover, Taylor & Francis support the Institute in other ways, such as sponsorship of activities and hospitality at the Annual Conference. Across the board, the relationship between the IEHF and Taylor & Francis is beneficial to all concerned. The wide circulation of the journal Ergonomics, in particular, is aided by the arrangement, and this contributes to the general advancement of the profession.
If the contract between the IEHF and Taylor & Francis did not exist, to maintain the Institute's income at the current level, Registered Members and Fellows would still have to pay much the same total subscription, but they would forfeit their members' rate journals. In addition, the beneficial links between the Institute and Taylor & Francis would be lessened.
Please note that the above arrangement is part of the IEHF contract with Taylor & Francis: hence, journals such as Applied Ergonomics and Ergonomics in Design from other publishers are not eligible as the obligatory journal for Registered Members and Fellows.
